Setting up the School Year for Success

Top Tips for a Stress-Free Start

By Nakayla Molstre (Second Grade Teacher Lake Stevens, WA)

Back to school is approaching, and with it, all the anxieties are starting to blossom.

As a teacher, I know how stressful this time can be, but over the years, I’ve developed a few top tips to ensure a stress-free start. With these strategies, we can set ourselves and our students up for a successful and enjoyable year. Here are my teacher top tips:

CREATE A JOYFUL AND CALM LEARNING ENVIRONMENT

First, create a classroom space that brings joy and a sense of calm. When I’m arranging my classroom, I always envision how my students and I will move around the space. If something doesn’t feel right, I move it! The flow of the classroom is crucial for student success. A peaceful environment can significantly impact both teaching and learning experiences.

Since I became a teacher, I’ve always added calming colors and cozy spaces to my room. If I'm not comfortable, how can I expect my students to be?
LABEL EVERYTHING

Another top tip of mine is to assign students a special number for their individual areas and belongings when they’re first setting up and label everything. I label mailboxes, folders, student notebooks, erasers, cubbies, book boxes, and line order spots. This system helps students know exactly what materials are theirs and where they go.

For example, if something gets left on a table or drops on the floor, we know exactly who it belongs to. This simple organizational strategy for classroom management saves time and reduces confusion, helping the classroom run smoothly.

ESTABLISH AND PRACTICE ROUTINES

When it comes to the secret to success, it’s all about routines, routines, routines. Students thrive when they know how and why we follow expectations in the classroom and around the school. As part of these teaching methods, we practice how to come to the rug, push in our chairs, walk to our line spots, ask questions, and respond to peers. If it doesn’t look perfect, we do it again and again until they show their very best!

Kids are so capable, and establishing these routines will pay off big time in the end. However, don’t forget make room for fun in your lesson plan. Last year, I introduced a challenge with specific expectations or goals. I drew three stars on a poster next to each expectation, and each time they demonstrated it correctly, I colored in a star. When all the stars were filled, we celebrated!

TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF

As we prepare for another school year, let's remember that we can't pour from an empty cup. Taking care of ourselves is essential. Make sure to take time in your schedule to do things that support your overall well-being and that you take comfort in.

Prioritizing self-care and connection helps us be the best educators we can be.”

Also, take time to connect with loved ones and colleagues for emotional support and camaraderie. When we feel good and are supported, we can teach with more energy and enthusiasm, which directly benefits our students.

CHOOSE COMFORTABLE FOOTWEAR

One key element in feeling supported during my work and keeping up with my busy timetable is my choice of footwear. As a teacher, I’m on my feet all day, and wearing comfortable and stylish shoes is essential.

That’s why I rely on FRANKIE4 footwear. Their wide range of shoes provide the perfect blend of comfort and support, allowing me to focus on my students without any distractions from sore feet. Plus, their designs are fashionable, so I can enjoy wearing them when I’m off duty too.

When it comes to FRANKIE4, my absolute go-to shoes are the Nat sneaker and the Liberty boot.

The Nat sneaker is a lifesaver on those busy days when I’m constantly on my feet. They’re super comfortable, with great support and cushioning, so my feet stay happy all day long. Plus, they look great with just about any outfit, making them a versatile choice for any day of the week.

The Liberty boot, on the other hand, is perfect when I want to look a bit more polished without giving up comfort. Whether I’m in meetings or going out after work, the Liberty boot has got me covered. Both shoes are stylish and functional, capturing everything I love about FRANKIE4.

FOSTER A POSITIVE CLASSROOM COMMUNITY

Finally, have fun and remember that they are still young children with diverse backgrounds, traditions, and home lives. Creating a positive and inclusive environment and classroom community is crucial. Celebrate their differences and create an environment where every student feels valued and respected. This will not only make your classroom a happier place but also foster a sense of belonging and acceptance among students.

HERE'S TO A GREAT YEAR!

Embrace the challenges, celebrate the successes, and enjoy the journey. With a well organized classroom, established routines, and a positive mindset, we can make this school year the best one yet. Let’s step into the new school year with confidence, comfort, and a commitment to creating a wonderful learning environment for our students.
